St Louis City Police Citizens Academy begins 9/4/13 – Apply now July 29, 2013

Application for the Citizens Academy

Citizens Academy

Interested in learning more about what police officers do everyday? The Citizens Academy offers an insider’s view into the day-to-day job of a St. Louis City Police Officer and is designed to further strengthen the bond between the department and the community. In addition to classroom instruction, participants also visit with police canines, interact with the department’s bomb and arson robot, tour the 911 center and even use driving and shooting simulators.

The Citizens Academy meets one night per week for 12 weeks. Actual police officers teach nearly all of the classes which include sessions on the department’s history and structure, crime patterns, gang intelligence, homicide investigations and community policing techniques among other things. Class members also participate in role-play, using their knowledge to diffuse situations our officers encounter everyday. At the end of the course, a graduation ceremony is held to honor those who have completed the course. Graduates of the program are able to apply the knowledge they’ve learned to better serve their neighborhoods and assist police when needed.

The Citizens Academy has proven to be a great tool in building bridges in the community. The course provides participants with an understanding of the challenges officers face everyday and the role the community serves in solving and preventing crimes. Recent graduates of the program can apply the knowledge they’ve learned in order to better serve their communities.

Application Process

Applicants must be St. Louis City residents or own a business in the city limits. Participants must be 18 or older and have no outstanding arrest warrants. All participants must agree to a criminal background check. There is no fee associated with attending the Citizens Academy.

Questions about the Citizens Academy should be directed tocitizensacademy@slmpd.org

Uber Asphalt Fundraising Bike Ride/Scavenger Hunt – Saturday 7/20/13 9:30 am July 15, 2013

Biking for beers. What's left to say?

Uber Asphalt on Saturday, July 20, 2013

is a fundraising bike ride / scavenger hunt

in St. Louis benefiting Lift For Life Academy and Trailnet.

Starts at 9:30 am

Lift For Life Academy

1731 S Broadway
Saint Louis, MO 63104

(314) 588-0007

Uber Asphalt is a scavenger hunt using bikes, brains and brawn. Starting and ending at Lift For Life Academy on Broadway, bikers in teams of two create their own courses throughout the city of St. Louis in order to get through six checkpoint obstacles in a race to complete this wild scavenger hunt in under 3 hours. At each of the six checkpoints, teammates complete an adventurous obstacle, collect a bottle cap, then remount their bikes and hit the streets for more. The goal is to complete all the checkpoints in the shortest amount of time.

Upon finishing, each team will receive a New Belgium beer for each bottle cap collected and turned in — up to a 6 pack per rider. For the under 21 crowd, an assorted 6 pack of Fitz’s Soda can be achieved. (Under 21 can compete with an adult.)

Register Here

Depending on your planned route, the approximate miles could be from 20 to 1000.

PLEASE NOTE THE COURSE IS NOT CLOSED TO TRAFFIC.

How well do you know St. Louis? Leading up to the event, checkpoint clues will be posted on Uber Asphalt’s Facebook page. Teams choose their route and checkpoint order, giving a distinct advantage to the uber clever.

We are all winners! While there are prizes for the top three in each division (men’s team, women’s team, coed team, and family team), this ride is designed as an all-inclusive fun raiser. You can wear spandex and clip in, or flip flops and ride a cruiser. Just remember safety is our highest priority, and please be respectful of the rules of the road.

Facebook Page

All participants will receive an event t-shirt, the opportunity to earn a six pack of assorted New Belgium beers, a free after party with a complimentary brew, and the great feeling that you donated to two local charities; Lift For Life Academy & Trailnet.

At the after party, enjoy live music, a free brew to participating riders, bike fashionista & funky bike awards, local fare from food trucks, bike blender smoothies for adults and kids, raffles and more.

Steamroller Bagel & Deli will be serving up tire-shaped food at the after party!  More to come.
