Capt. Luis Carlos Montalvan Book Signing & Dinner 9/20 & 9/21/13 – Stray Rescue & Warriors Heart Foundation September 15, 2013

Captain Luis Carlos Montalván is a highly decorated 17-year veteran of the U.S. Army. After tours in the Iraq War, he returned home to face a different set of challenges: physical wounds, traumatic brain injury and crippling PTSD. Enter Tuesday, a Golden Retriever skilled in assisting the disabled, himself emotionally wounded during his training process. Each turned out to be exactly what the other needed, creating an unbreakable bond which healed each other’s souls. “Until Tuesday” has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list numerous times since 2011. Luis and Tuesday live in New York City and frequently travel and lecture about their written work and advocacy. Their projects include a major motion picture based on “Until Tuesday;” an independent documentary film, titled “Buried Above Ground” in which Luis is co-featured; and co-hosting “Tails of Valor,” a forthcoming television program about heroes who overcome enormous obstacles or put themselves in harm’s way to save others.

All proceeds from this exclusive first time visit to St. Louis benefit Stray Rescue of Saint Louis and Warriors Heart Foundation. In conjunction with this exclusive visit to St. Louis, Luis and Tuesday will be visiting the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center PTSD Ward on Sunday Sept 22. Luis and Tuesday hope that through these visits they can shed light not only on the plight of those who suffer from PTSD, but also to the epidemic of abused and homeless animals and the incredible ability they have to enrich our lives.

Sponsorship and donation opportunities are still available. Please contact jenn@strayrescue.org or call 314-771-6121 ext 229

2013 Urban Wanderers Art Exhibition – Friday 3/22/13 – Sunday 5/5/13 March 20, 2013

2013 Urban Wanderers Art Exhibition

Date/Time:
Friday, March 22, 2013 – 6:00pm – Sunday, May 5, 2013 – 11:59pm
Location:
Saint Louis University Museum of Art: 3663 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108

Stray Rescue of St. Louis and the Saint Louis University Museum of Art have set the stage for another installment of the landmark Urban Wanderers Art Exhibition. Following another record-setting year in 2012, which saw a staggering 1,600 people in attendance on opening night, the theme of this year’s eagerly anticipated show will be “The Plight of the Street Dog,” a focus that will educate on the dire hardships of strays on the streets, as well as their uplifting recoveries.

“All those we rescue have important stories to tell, and telling these stories through art has proven to be a captivating way to show the reality of what homeless companion animals face on a daily basis,” said Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue. “The event also draws attention to how shelter animals enrich people’s lives and make the greatest companions – it’s truly one-of-a-kind.”

The exhibition provides Stray Rescue with the opportunity to present the public with facts about the problem, but also highlight the tremendous amount of forward progress the organization has made in recent years to make St. Louis a safer, more compassionate city for both companion animals and people.

Artists will paint, photograph, and sculpt a Stray Rescue dog or cat that has been abandoned, abused, or neglected, and shelter dogs will create works of art using their paws, tails, and noses. The exhibition has gained a reputation for not only being unique and inspirational, but also for attracting well-respected artists exhibiting on regional, national, and international levels.

The exhibition will open on Friday, March 22, with a reception beginning at 6 p.m., and will run through Sunday, May 5. The opening, which is free-of-charge and open to the public, includes food, beverages and, of course, truly heartwarming and professional works of art inspired by Stray Rescue’s companion animals. Please leave your pets at home.

All art displayed in the exhibition will be available through an online auction by visiting www.blacktie-missouri.com/auctions. Bidding will begin on Friday, March 22, and 100% of the funds raised will go directly to helping homeless dogs and cats.

Join us for a “Meet the Artist” event on Friday, April 12 at Saint Louis University Museum of Art. The event will begin at 5:00 p.m.

About This Year’s Urban Wanderers Spokesdog
In late September, 2012, Stray Rescue saved an amazingly sweet dog after he had been shot not once, not twice, but at least 12 times. Randy Grim, founder of Stray Rescue, named him OP, short for Optimus Prime. After being shot, the gentle dog was tossed in a dumpster and left to die. He had an electrical cord tightly wrapped around his neck. OP received intensive medical treatment at Stray Rescue’s trauma center and Veterinary Specialty Services for weeks; however, due to a bullet lodged near his spine, he lost the use of the lower half of his body. After a miraculous recovery, and aided by a custom-built cart, the sweet dog was taken home by Grim and introduced to his new, loving home. OP’s story is a striking reminder of both the resiliency of our four-legged friends, as well as the violence of which people are capable, and these are the important stories told through the Urban Wanderers Art Exhibition. To learn more about OP, please visit http://strayrescue.org/node/4837.
