BEST SLEDDING SPOTS IN ST LOUIS COUNTY! February 26, 2015

BEST SLEDDING SPOTS IN ST LOUIS COUNTY!

With the weather turning colder and the parks now “winterized,” it’s easy to just want to stay inside and sit on the couch. But winter in your St. Louis County Parks is anything but boring.

The Parks department offers a wide variety of events and activities for you and your family to participate in to stay active and healthy.

Sledding is a fun activity for kids and adults.  Some of the best hills in the County can be found at:

Sioux Passage

Endicott Park in North County

Suson Park in South County

The scenic circle at Jefferson Barracks Park

The hill behind the Greensfelder Recreation Complex at Queeny Park.

Sled riding is permitted in all St. Louis County Parks except for Lone Elk, Veterans Memorial and Kennedy.

Though sledding can be a great deal of fun, it’s important to take a few safety precautions in order to make sure the adventure isn’t tainted by injury:

  • ·         Be sure to bundle up and wear clothing that is waterproof and warm.
  • ·         Don’t go alone – make sure there is another person, preferably another adult who could administer first aid and call 911 if necessary.
  • ·         Always sit face-forward on the sled and don’t go down the hill face-first, this greatly increases the risk of a head injury.
  • ·         There should only be one person per sled with the exception of kids five and under who should sled with an adult.
  • ·         Leave plenty of space between you and the sledder in front of you and when walking back up, walk up the side of the hill.

Tree Remembrance Program – St Louis County Parks September 8, 2014

Urban Tree Program

St. Louis County Parks is dedicated to the reforestation, enhancement and development of our urban and community forests. You can be a contributing factor to our dedication through the Urban Tree Program. Participants may engrave a bevel-edged brick with their personal message; sponsor the planting of a tree or the placement of a park bench. Your donation to the program will improve the quality of life for present and future generations by preserving and improving the natural scenic and recreation sites for their enjoyment.

Urban Tree Program Options

THE BRICK YOU ENGRAVE: The cost of an 8” X 4” engraved bevel-edged brick is $120. Although bricks will be engraved in a timely manner, the date cannot be guaranteed due to requirements of the engraver.

Bricks are installed at the following locations:

  • Spanish Lake Park – O’Mara Shelter Flagpole, 12636 Spanish Lake Pond Road, St. Louis, MO 63138
  • Queeny Park – Barn Garden/Lilac Walkway, 1675 S. Mason Road, St. Louis, MO 63131
  • Jefferson Barracks Park – Visitors Center Flagpole, 345 North Road, St. Louis, MO 63125

THE TREE YOU SPONSOR: The cost of a tree is $200. St. Louis County Parks reserves the right to choose the tree and planting location within a park that meets the needs of the park. Trees are planted in December and have a one year guarantee. If it should die within one year, a replacement will be planted during the following planting season. The cost of a tree and an engraved brick is $320. The engraved brick will be placed at your choice of locations from the list above. It will not be placed beneath the tree.

THE BENCH YOU PLACE: The cost of a park bench with an engraved bronze plaque is $1,620. Benches are 5 feet long and constructed of recycled plastic with a black metal frame. A bronze plaque, with your chosen message, is attached to the top rail of the bench. In choosing a bench location within a given park, the donor will meet with the program coordinator and the park supervisor.

SPONSOR A BENCH & TREE: The final level of donation includes a park bench and a tree. The cost is $1,820. Where space permits, a tree may be planted near a bench to provide welcome shade during the summer months, otherwise it will be planted elsewhere within the park.

Upon receiving an application for an engrave brick, tree, or bench, a notification card will be sent to the recipient. Card choices include, In Memory, In Honor & In Celebration. Donors and recipients will receive notification by post card when their brick, tree or bench is in place.

Payment must accompany the application. Choices for payment include check or charge. St. Louis County Parks accepts Visa, MasterCard & Discover. Your donation is tax deductible as provided by law.
